A prison full of words

The Poetry Brothel was once launched in New York, and since then has grown into an international phenomenon. This autumn several editions are happening in Europe; besides cities like Berlin, London, Paris, Barcelona and Reykjavik, Utrecht also gets its first Poetry Brothel.

For one night, poetry is taken away from the usual stage to an ambiance with seduction at every turn. The theme Crimes Passionnels is a tribute to the exclusive location: the historical (former) prison at the Wolvenplein. For this occasion, the stark cells act as private rooms for our international and Dutch ‘red light’ poets. Behind heavy steel doors, they revive their work with their heart, their warmth and their charm.

The poets will excite you in English, French or, of course, in Dutch! In-between you can go back to the central hall filled with music, theatre, dance, books, drinks, snacks, and other pleasures! Your ticket gets you access to it all, including unlimited private readings with our line up of poetry whores.

You can be there!

Join us in your most charming, ravishing or even flamboyant clothes! You will be touched by their beautiful words.

Parlour Trixie
United States

Parlour Trixie has served as court poet to street dwellers and aristocrats alike. His poems hang on the walls of prison cells, hospital rooms, squats and castles. He is a champion of the mad, the disenfranchised, the rebellious, without regard to class or status. He is an ally to those who fight whatever system they are born into, and to those who find their inspiration in the desperate anonymity of the night sky. Tell him your problems, and he will turn them into weapons.

The Madame

United States

The Madame was conceived, but never born. She wrote on the shadowy walls of some feminine void for centuries, quill dripping with the quiet of her solitude. One day she heard something from the outside: “We shall be fat, gentlemen, but never happy.” In that very instant, she stepped out of the womb like a nude from a painting, a starlet from the silver screen, cool, milky & voluptuously formed, reflective pools in her big grey eyes.

Anna Pantalona

The Netherlands

A true rags to riches story, the rise of Pantalona’s Pants Emporium is a tale of epic proportions. Her unique collection of pants are coveted around the world, she creates it all out of stardust, gold thread and love. When you come into her fitting room for a custom creation, she does not only tailors clothes, but also her words.

The Lord of Darkness

Nederland

The Lord of Darkness was born as part of an eruption. His verses rip the heavens. The temptation he offers is the celebration of the procrastination of the end; darkly meandering, Styx-like the rhythm of his stanzas takes you to where never before, to where no beyond. Come and join him.

Ambrosia

Belgium

Almost three thousand years ago, she shared the sheets of Homerus and thus became the eyes of the blind poet. When Homerus died, Ambrosia was erased from history. The Greek believed that red-haired women were turned into vampires when they died. Out of love for literature, Ambrosia kept herself alive for three thousand years.

Kalypso

Belgium

Be aware of Kalypso. With a delicate precision she will drip words on your skin. Words that caress but slowly scrape. Words that are above all inevitable. Their barbs will hook into your epidermis and nestle there forever. The only thing left to do is to embrace your new situation. Resistance will lead to your downfall.

Marquise

The Netherlands

Noblesse oblige? The Marquess is a rich heiress from the Dutch imperium Van Bronkhorst. She spent her life in mysterious seclusion in her large villa, with a few mice. Rumor has it that she performed psychological experiments on her visitors. Rumor has it there were mice. But how did she end up in jail?

Du Halunke

Brazil

Du Halunke lives somewhere where our concept of time does not really make perfect sense. Bored with heavenly politics, he comes when humans get close to the edge of themselves. Whispering “give in” and “resist” at the same time. He is the Logos himself, the number three, he’s dynamic duality and paradox, hedonically ecstatic to be here, at your service.

Stained Grace

United States

Let us look for what sacred pours out of passion. Painter of transparent words, Stained Grace also solders metal that contains a universe in light. Let her draw you with dashes of staccato ink, or warm your ears with a collage of the carnal and divine. Sensitive, sincere and soft, one is advised to not underestimate her strength. These eyes and voice may haunt you well beyond the height of gothic arches. A reading from Grace’s mouth will give you an experience of mystery, art and intimacy unparalleled.

Armand

France

Armand was born Andrei in 1481 Kievan Russia to acclaimed vampire hunter Ivan. He was abducted by Tartar invaders as a child and sold on the Constantinople slave markets, ultimately purchased by a Venetian brothel where he suffered particularly creative torture and abuse. He was eventually turned into a vampire at the age of 19 by his father’s arch-nemesis, a French Baron known only as Magnus. After exacting vengeance on his abusers, he lost his last shred of humanity after killing his father in a protracted battle during which Magnus was slain with a rosewood arrow to the heart. Andrei took the name Armand thereafter, in honour of the master who made him. Armand has been wandering Old Europe ever since, in particular Paris, enslaving common mortals with his trademark poetic hypnosis. While his slaves feed him regularly and care for him in daylight hours, at night he roams wild and free.

Alizee Mistral

Belgium

Her father chose the seven sees. Her lover left her for a ship. So Alizée threw herself in the wild and crashing waves of the ocean and became a pirate. She squanders her money by consuming liters of rum and throws the empty bottles in the see with paper messages of nightly poetry.

Chapman

From a forgotten village, where he, in a time long lost served an unremembered lord and a lady. Known by nobility for his impeccable manners and his silk tongue, many a lady trusted him with her secrets, that he carefully stashed under his bowler hat…

Bibi hopes to use her measured words to transport you into the deep heart of her fantasies.

Felicity Fatale

Belgium

Since the beginning of time, Fifi lures you in with irresistibles lamentations of ancient heartbreak. Sailors, rules or macho men, nobody escapes her charm. A meeting with felicity is a meeting with your destiny. She strikes when your flesh is the weakest. Crush upon her lips and stumble in her unrest.

Don Kairos von Matthias

Ireland

She delects diving the depths of oceans seeking pearls, and deciphering dreams, erotic by preference. Don’t be shy, you can come soak in a her words for a bit. Just be sure not be swept away in the rip tide.

Naomi de Plume

The Netherlands

Naomi de Plume (1865-1921), is as gentle as they come. But watch out, never look straight into her eyes, that will make her angry. Raised by foxes, she returned to the only place that reminded her of home, the zoo. There she observes you, the visitor and concludes the only interesting thing is whether or not you can listen.

Ruben van Luijk

The Netherlands

You will know when he’s there, his ego will fill the room. Inevitably drawn by the darkness, his research on satanism took his name and his sanity. He uses his scientific mind to unearth things that might not be ready for human eyes. He doesn’t care, as long as he can keep his little pornographic collages in his cigarillo tins.

The Poetry Oracle

United States

Miss Delirium

Great Brittain

Take only a glance at Miss Delirium, for if you look her in the eye, the very fabric of the air will tear. Inspired by alternate realities and warped perception, the only thing of value to Miss Delirium is unchartered territory. Plunge into the unknown and let her open your mind with her tongue.

Miss Messalina

United States

Born from the fire of pure destruction, she makes scorched earth her policy. Woo her and watch her bend to your will; anger her and face certain death. Her writings are musing, mystic and earthy, sprung from her head, heart and thighs. A word of warning to those who enter her den: Missy Messalina takes no prisoners.

E. Pelski C.

Belgium

Nobody knows what the C. in her name stands for. She predicts prosperity in a singing voice, but watch out. Her songs are not without its dangers. They say that you risk the chance to forget everything and get lost in the eternal mist. They say that no one ever returns. But maybe you don’t want to be found.

La Loba

United States

She grinned, baring her wolf’s teeth. She bared her breasts to the moon and the moon bared back. She towered over the trees, and cowered before no other creature. She visited the spirit world, brought offerings to the places she knew to bring them. She will be reborn again among those that seek her. She will do it all again.

Tennessee Pink

United States

What little we know of Tennessee Pink we have pieced together, from bathroom walls, American folk songs, and the names he shouts in the rare moments of fitful sleep he suffers in the night. And from his poems, which mention the darkness of days in caves and crumbling houses, the exhaust of men and ancient machines, Crimean lips and the shipwrecks he has scavenged. We often think he is uncomfortable on land or above it. He would be more at home with a shovel in his hand or a tiller, but he is ours for now, perhaps by some spell or great debt, he is held here. He will read to you but be wary. Tennessee has traveled in many directions and knows where much is hidden, he is at ease in the darkness and will be happiest to find you there, going along with him, toward some perfect wound, enclosed in a tiny, imperceptible blossom, making pain.

Melissa Porselein

The Netherlands

Dr. Pipistrello

The Netherlands

He comes out at night, not just any night, but when the surroundings are lit by blueish moonlight. His wings as well his heart flutters when he sees her radiant surface. He bottles up his love during the day, when he is just Dr. Pipistrello to the common folk, and drinks it all when the skies are clear and dark. Are you there in his presence, when he declares his admiration for the moon to you?

Tanuki

The Netherlands

It’s curious and cute, most of the time, but this raccoon spirit will surprise you time and time again before the night is over. With many a trick and mask up its sleeve, it can show you sides of it, and sides of you, you never even knew existed. Don’t bother approaching with your own mask, for Tanuki’s paws of poetry will peel it off in no time. Tanuki is the master of masks after all.

Marcel Petite Montage

Belgium

Woe to the chap who lost his heart to a porcelain nymph. With good intentions he became her muse, but alas, harm was done. She morphed into a succubus, taking him as prey. Now he is caged in a brothel, where his innocence is lusted after! What became of this innocent, dreaming boy? Come see him in his chamber, but beware – life in a brothel does strange things to a man.

Jack Cassady

Great Brittain

Jack Cassady was born somewhere between a train track and the wide hues of the California coastline. Ethereally beating raconteur, adorned in trinkets of his past so too his writing. A life that can be described only as, ‘in between’, hear him howl seamlessly through what echoes between nature, the city, and memories that emblazon upon us all the absurdity and cruelty of our existence.

Zizi Zinnona

The Netherlands

A fictive creature of endless curves, copious curves. Born from foam, she will disappear as melting snow. Clothed in baroque imagery, she faces you. Flaming and flushed. Serpentine and spherical. The richly eloquent fashion in which she negotiates her stunning voluptuousness simply speaks volumes.
